We lose ourselves in all of the advice and easily get confused about who we truly are.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Getting to know yourself is key in making exercise and movement a life-long habit. \u00a0And this is a key you want to hold.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>What Does Finding an Exercise You Enjoy Really Mean?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Finding an exercise you like and enjoy simply means you\u2019re having fun doing it! \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0One question you may want to ask yourself is:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhat type of fitness can I see myself doing for the rest of my life?\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For those of you who have already found it, this answer may come easy. \u00a0For others, it may be time to tap into your creative self and affirm your answer to this very question.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b>Opening Yourself Up<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Don\u2019t be afraid to open yourself up and try something new. \u00a0Fear is there to protect us but it can also keep us stuck. Take time to look at your fears and ask yourself what may be keeping you stuck.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Consider things such as:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI\u2019m afraid I can\u2019t keep up.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Or<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI\u2019m afraid I\u2019ll make a fool of myself.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Or<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI don\u2019t know how to use the machines. \u00a0I hate asking for help.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Keep in mind that fitness is a journey, not a destination. \u00a0If you\u2019re afraid you can\u2019t keep up, do the moves slower until you get stronger. \u00a0Safety comes first in any situation.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many people have this preconceived notion that the gym is filled with people with perfect bodies. This simply isn\u2019t true. People visiting the gym and even those holding gym memberships are just like everyone else and everyone\u2019s goal is to live a healthy and balanced lifestyle. \u00a0Even if you\u2019re really out of shape, don\u2019t worry about it and don\u2019t obsess over your appearance. You\u2019ll find many supportive people every place you go.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The bottom line is don\u2019t be afraid to put yourself out there and be the real you. \u00a0Never forget that you\u2019re not alone. Most importantly, go at your own pace and be safe!<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Asking for help and assistance is a sign of strength, not a sign of weakness. \u00a0Don\u2019t hesitate to ask a gym employee or trainer for help. That\u2019s what these people are there for and they are happy to assist you. \u00a0Most likely, they\u2019re cheering you on each step of the way!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Exercising Regularly<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Exercising regularly has many benefits. \u00a0Some of these may include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Exercising regularly may help improve mood.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Exercising regularly may assist in boosting energy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Exercising regularly may help you fall asleep faster. \u00a0(Tip: Don\u2019t exercise too closely to bedtime or it may inhibit you from falling asleep because of increased energy.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Exercising regularly may assist in reducing LDL cholesterol and raising HDL cholesterol.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Exercising regularly may assist with weight loss.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Exercising regularly may help strengthen and define muscles.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Exercising regularly may help build stronger bones.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Exercising regularly may help lower your heart rate and blood pressure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Exercising regularly may help improve self-esteem.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Exercising regularly may help reduce levels of anxiety and depression.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s Your Excuse?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you find yourself making excuses not to exercise and move, you may not have found your exercise joy. \u00a0Take notice of when you find yourself making excuses about your exercise routine. Some of your excuses may include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I\u2019m too tired to exercise.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I have too many things to do, I don\u2019t have time.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I\u2019m too old to start exercising.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I\u2019m not athletic and I\u2019m overweight.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I don\u2019t have the right outfits or clothes to start exercising.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Exercise is boring.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The kids have homework.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you find yourself making excuses, look for ways to turn these excuses right around. \u00a0For example, if one of your excuses is that exercise is boring, find activities you love to do. \u00a0If the gym makes you feel confined to small spaces, try taking a walk in nature. If there isn\u2019t a trail available to you, look for a track at your local high school. \u00a0There are often many walkers on the track after school has let out for the day doing exactly what you\u2019re looking to do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you find yourself saying that you\u2019re too tired to move and exercise, go for shorter, lower impact intervals. \u00a0This is a great way to motivate yourself and fit some exercise into your daily routine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s true that our children oftentimes have a bountiful amount of homework in hand when they hit the door after a long day at school. \u00a0Children, however, need a break too. Taking a fifteen minute family break and playing tag or walking the family dog is a great way to spend time together as a family and get in some much needed movement. \u00a0Enjoy your time together and find creative ways to get your bodies moving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Focus on What You Love to Do<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you hate going to the gym, most likely you won\u2019t be able to maintain a gym membership and get the most value for your money, no matter how good it may be for you. \u00a0On the other hand, if you love nature and being outdoors, hiking and playing tennis may be the exact exercise program you\u2019re looking for. Design your life and build your exercise routine around the activities and places you love and enjoy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Bottom Line<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Exercise and physical activity is a great path to feeling better and finding balance. \u00a0As a general goal, aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity each and every day. If you want to lose weight or meet specific fitness goals, you may need to exercise more.
